PALAZZO RE ENZO - Piazza Nettuno 1

In 1200 the Municipality of Bologna expropriated several houses and churches in order to create today's Piazza Maggiore, thus laying the foundation for the first compound of palaces specifically built for public administrative functions: Palazzo del Podestà, di Re Enzo e del Capitano del Popolo

PALAZZO RE ENZO - Piazza Nettuno 1

Palazzo Re Enzo was built between 1244-1246 when also Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo was raised as an extension of the Municipal buildings. The palace was also known as 'new palace' to differentiate it from Palazzo del Podestà. Just three years later the palace became the 'residence' of the King taken prisoner in the battle of Fossalta: Re Enzo from Sardinia, son of Federico II. The king would spend here the next 23 years, until his death in 1272. His figure inspired many legends in popular literature.

Palazzo Re Enzo is still today home of the municipality of the city.

Cost per person Euro 55,00 (VAT included)

Today only 24 are left, some clearly visible as the Asinelli and the Garisenda, other hidden between the buildings, striking witnesses of the centuries going by.
This unusual tour will take participants to hunt towers and listen to everything they have to tell us, while admiring from the top of some of them a spectacular view of the city.
